Sandy Hill hosted a winter classic outdoor hockey tournament that raised $3,000 for the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation in Toronto on January 24.

“It’s a good cause and we had a really good turnout last year so we decided to do it again,” said Evan Trofimchuk, event coordinator. “It’s not a big surprise, it is for charity after all.”

The Sandy Hill Goon Squad won the tournament in a 2-0 win against The Easton Fection. Their reward: the Lord Stanley trophy. The trophy has a strong resemblance to the Stanley Cup but with a water cooler jug for a base.

This is the second year the game was organized where everyone was welcome but consisted mostly of uOttawa students. Admission to play was $20 with over 160 players that signed up.

“I was here last year and it’s even bigger this time around. There’s a trophy and everything,” said Kyle Dunn, volunteer and coordinator assistant.

Games of round robin were played all day with the tournament starting at 5 p.m. going all night until 10 p.m.

“It’s a lot of fun, I’m having an awesome time. I’m trying my best to do my part too by helping clear the ice,” says Kendra Sellick, volunteer and ice maintenance official.

There were a number of sponsors this year including Slice & Co., Red Bull, Green Room and many others. There were also a number of prizes including Beats by Dr. Dre and Slice & Co. gift cards.

“We hope to do this every year, it’s a lot of fun and people will come, that’s a guarantee. Why wouldn’t you?” said Trofimchuk.
