What does it mean to be quintessentially Canadian?

On the international stage, Canadians are often thought to be polite, quiet and pleasantly diplomatic. Sure, we have a few defining characteristics floating a-boot, but how did we earn this kind of passive and unassuming persona? When put simply, are we as polite as we seem?
