Viral videos are all the rage in today’s technological age of content consumption. There are millions of people across the globe who try and have their voices heard on the Internet, whether it’s through blogs, social media or videos.

With all this material out there that’s so easily accessible, how can you rise above and be heard amidst the sea of people?

“The most important thing to consider when making videos is to create content that will interest and impact people,” says Philip Kowalczyk, who is a current student in the interactive multimedia developer program at Algonquin College.

Just as in all walks of like, becoming a YouTube hit takes talent, effort, dedication and a little bit of luck. Additionally getting noticed by the “mainstream” media also helps to build buzz.

“To have a video go viral word of mouth from the audience is critical,” Kowalczyk says. “For that reason, your content must be interesting, relevant, shocking, and spark emotion in your viewer.”

Kowalczyk also added that posting your video on several different mediums is also essential in creating buzz over your video, allowing users to view your video on YouTube, Facebook, Vimeo and even on their phones.

So, what’s the magic formula for YouTube stardom? Here are some tips that will get you on the right track.

Build your network

If you have a large network, your videos will be viewed and shared more, thus increasing your chances of becoming a YouTube star. The most crucial element to help get your image out on the Internet is social media. You need to utilize Facebook and Twitter by advertising your videos to friends and building your YouTube network by reaching out to others who are interested and watching videos on topics similar to yours. Also piggybacking on other famous videos will help get your video in everyone’s face. Posting a “video response” to an already viral video that relates to what you are producing, will help you find other people who appreciate your abilities as well.

Find your niche

If you want to separate yourself from the rest of the videos on YouTube, newcomers should look for a niche that has not yet been filled. Selecting a strong, narrow niche will help you stay relevant and on target.

A good example of someone providing a certain type of product would be “Sxephil.”

Philip DeFranco has become an Internet star by creating videos that are centered on current events, politics and celebrity gossip in which he gives his opinion, usually presented in an ironic manner.

So why does the show rank 16th in most subscribed channels on YouTube?

The show is well produced. There are no other current events shows on in the Internet that put the same twist and flair. “Sxephil” found a niche that a surprising number of people are interested in.

“Never ask your audience what kind of videos they want to see, that’s one of the worst things you can do,” said DeFranco.

“I know from experience. Audiences don’t know what they really want till you give it to them right.”

The more consistent you are the more easily recognizable you will become.

Be professional

While you may not be able to afford an expensive high-definition DSLR video camera, and you are stuck shooting on a webcam, you should still try to make your videos as professional as possible. Make sure you test the sound on the camera you are using to ensure it is clear, with little background noise. You should also be aware of your surroundings. Do not be afraid to go out and set up some props to help make your videos look more professional. If you can get your hands on a studio you’re well on your way. This can be as simple as setting up a blue or green sheet to act as a green screen in a spare room in your house.

Now that you know some of the secrets of becoming a YouTube star, grab your camera, press record, upload to the Internet and enjoy you stardom, however small it may be.
